You Hearing Aid Fitting and What to Expect

It is time to pick up you hearing aids. But before you can take them home you need to make sure that they are fit and programmed properly for you.

So what should you expect when it comes to the fit and feel of your new hearing aids?

How will my hearing aids feel?

Your hearing aids overall should feel and fit snugly in your ear. Depending on the type of hearing aid you purchased you may have needed to decide on a type of earmold. Each earmold is designed to fit snugly in your ear canal. There should not be any major or uncomfortable pressure associated with the fit of the ear mold. If there is tell your hearing health professional immediately so that they can make any adjustments as needed.

Your hearing health professional will be able to make minor adjustments to your earmold in-house. Any major fit problems will need to be sent out to the manufacturer to either adjust or re-make the earmold. Sometimes depending on the fit of the mold a new earmold impression may need to be taken. With a BTE hearing it should fit comfortably behind the ear. The hook should be comfortable and fit snugly over the ear.

The tubing should be long enough to fit the earmold or dome in the ear canal properly and snugly in the canal. If the tubing is too short the earmold may pop out of the canal or not fit properly into the canal causing problems with fit and sound. Also if the tubing is incorrect the hook of the BTE may push forward and not fit correctly on or behind the ear causing fit and sound problems as well.

You may also need to try out different types of domes when it comes to your open BTE to ensure a proper fit and sound quality for your hearing aids. If you wear glasses be sure to bring or wear them to the appointment as they can affect the fit of the hearing aid as well.

Placing the hearing aid

A major part of the fit and feeling of a hearing aid all depends on the placement of the hearing aid in and on the ear. If you do not put your hearing aid in properly fit problems can arise so be sure to go over how to properly put in and take out your hearing aids.

Practice in front of a mirror so that you can visually watch how you put in and take out your hearing aids. Properly putting in and taking out your hearing aids is also important when it comes to sound quality as well as longevity of your hearing aid. If at any time after the purchase and initial fitting of your hearing aids you have problems with the fit, feel or how to properly put in your hearing aids see your hearing health professional as soon as possible so they can go over things with you to help solve the problem to ensure you and your hearing aids fit and feel proper.
