How to Take Care of Your Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are truly incredible, life-improving devices that millions of people across the country rely on. However, hearing aids are also the product of complex, sophisticated engineering, which means that a few care measures are required to ensure your device is always fully functional and working at its best. Clean your hearing aids every time you use them 

• Every time you remove your hearing aids, use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the device down gently
• Doing this can help avoid significant issues – such as earwax buildup – that can hamper the performance of your device 

Change the wax filter as required

• Most hearing aids are equipped with a wax filter, which is designed to catch earwax and prevent it from reaching the internal components of the device
• Even with regular wipe-downs, you will still need to change the wax filter regularly; your audiologist will be able to advise you further on how this should be done. 

Avoid moisture 

• Hearing aids – including those that are marketed as water-resistant – can develop faults if they become wet, so avoiding moisture is incredibly important. 
• Remove your hearing aids when showering or bathing, or if you are caught in a rainstorm without an umbrella. 

Do not use heat to dry your hearing aids

• Products such as hairspray, deodorant, and perfume can all pose a risk to hearing aids
• Get into the habit of removing your hearing aids before using any of the products and when using hairspray, ensure that the spray has dried onto your hair before inserting your hearing aids

 Take your hearing aids to be cleaned professionally 

• While cleaning your hearing aid at home is essential, regular professional cleanings are far more in-depth and can help to avoid problems from developing
• Your audiologist will be able to advise how regularly your hearing aid can be cleaned, though you can arrange a cleaning at any time if you suspect any issues are developing or are experiencing problems

Store your hearing aids carefully 

• Hearing aids should be stored in a secure container and, ideally, one that can help keep your device dry.
• Ensure that pets or young children cannot access your hearing aids
